Keeping the cost down

With winter in full blast, heating bills have increased as more and more people try to keep toasty warm. It’s no fun being cold and damp at home trying to save a few dollars on the heating bill. Here are a few ways to actually reduce the heating cost.

Keeping your home cozy and warm.

Keeping your humidifier on – humidifiers give off moist air which is good in the winter time because moist air feels much warmer than dry air. This means that working in conjunction with your thermostat will reduce your heating bill by 15% and lower the thermostat by 3 degrees. It allows you to be warm and toasty without paying the high heating cost.

Keeping the windows locked –Many people don’t actually lock them. This is not a good idea both from the perspective of being safe and keeping the heating cost down. By locking the windows you will be able to save over 5% on your bill and this seals the window by pushing it down into the track and seals it so the warm air stays in the home and the cold air stays where it should … outside.

Exhaust Systems - House hold fans are not just for keeping cool but, if used in the correct manner will have you feeling warm and snug. Running your ceiling fan or portable fan on reverse and low setting will push the warm air down from the ceiling into the room to keep it warmer. On the other hand running the bathroom and kitchen exhaust fan can exhaust the warm air out leaving the cool air. That’s what they are supposed to do, remove odors and smells out and replace it with fresh air. So, if you have to run these exhausts do it no more than 10 – 15 minutes maximum.

Furniture Placement can mean savings – Many times furniture is placed in rooms not for saving money but for style. This can cost hundreds of dollars in heating costs yearly. Having furniture in front of heating vents or over prevents the heat from flowing in the room and keeping it warm. Move furniture out of the way for better air flow. If moving furniture is not possible then shift it 6 ft. away so the air can at least circulate better.

Keeping warm – cuddling with a pet can be a warm thing to do. A dog’s body temperature is 103 Fahrenheit and a cat is 100 Fahrenheit – to 102 Fahrenheit. These kinds of temperature can increase a humans temperature from 98.6 to 99.6 a full temperature. So it’s alright snuggling with your pet for warmth, well ... and love too.

Wearing the Right Fabric- We all love sleeping in cotton night wear but cotton doesn’t necessarily keep you warm. The fabric of choice is wearing silk. Silk is not permeable like cotton so it insulates the body to keep heat in and keep you warm. So with wearing silk, you can turn your heat down by one degree to save up to 10% of your heating bill. A cooler bed room invites a more restful sleep. This is another great way to reduce the heating cost.

Wearing socks to bed helps the body stay warm. If the feet are warm, the whole body will be warm.

Implementing each of these suggestions would greatly reduce the heating cost.
